Are you a black woman who is struggling with hair loss? Well, you are not alone. According to recent survey results presented at the American Academy of Dermatology’s (AAD) 74th Annual Meeting, nearly half of African-African women have experienced hair loss.
According to the AAD, of the 5,594 women who have completed the survey, 47.6 percent reported hair loss on the crown or top of the scalp. The survey also shows the problem usually goes undiagnosed. More than 80% of women indicated they had never seen a physician about hair loss.
Experts believe that a huge factor of hair loss among African-American women is genetic predisposition. That risk may increase with styling practices such as braiding, weaves and chemical relaxing.
Early signs of hair loss can include patches of hair that does not grow back and decreasing hair volume. The AAD suggests that women ask their hair stylists to let them know if anything is unusual and consult a board-certified dermatologist if they are experiencing hair loss.
