Some people are aware of sarcoidosis because of comedian and actor, Bernie Mac, who died due to complications from the disease in 2008. However this rare disease itself is still not well known.
Sarcoidosis is the growth of tiny groups of inflammatory cells in different areas of the body, although the lungs, lymph nodes, eyes, and skin are the most common. It’s unclear what triggers the immune system to create the inflammation. Doctors however believe an inhaled substance may be to blame. According to the American Lung Association, African Americans are more predisposed to this disease, although it is not limited to this group. If a family member has sarcoidosis, you are more likely to develop the disease as well.Symptoms, which can appear gradually or suddenly, show up in a number of ways. Many people may not experience any symptoms at all. The Mayo Clinic has the following list:
Generalized symptoms
- Fatigue
- Fever
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Weight loss
Lung symptoms
- Persistent dry cough
- Shortness of breath
- Wheezing
- Chest pain
Skin symptoms
- Rash
- Lesions
- Color change
- Nodules
Eye symptoms
- Blurred vision
- Eye pain
- Severe redness
- Sensitivity to light
For most people, sarcoidosis goes away on its own. The disease can be chronic for others however, and can lead to complications including lung tissue damage, blindness, and kidney failure.
If you believe you are suffering from sarcoidosis, you should visit a doctor. Apart from a physical exam, tests such as an x-ray, CT scan, and biopsy can further assist with a diagnosis. There is no cure for sarcoidosis. Treatment includes anti-inflammatory medication for organs affected by the disease and joint and muscle discomfort.
This April, help spread the word about sarcoidosis.
