We all know these commercials. Advertisements for skin care has increased dramatically in recent years, especially different products for exfoliation. Despite the cheesy advertisements, exfoliation is something we need to pay attention to. Exfoliation is growing in popularity as a method of skin rejuvenation. As we get older, skill cell rejuvenation slows and becomes less agile as it once was. Build-up of dead skin cells leave the skin looking dry, dull and potentially acne-prone. There are many methods out there to aid in the removal of dead skill cells that accumulate on the skin’s surface. However, with weekly exfoliation, dead skin cells can be easily removed. Thus, creating bright, fresh, and youthful skin.

We’re here to introduce you to different methods of exfoliation so you may try them out and find the right fit for your skin.

First, we have Mechanical Exfoliation. This involves the use of a tool (i.e. brush) or substrate (i.e. Rice bran or Oatmeal) and an applied use of friction. Depending on the amount of friction exerted, it can knock loose those dead skin cell. Be careful not to rub too hard or skin irritation may occur.

Second, we have Chemical Exfoliation. There are many distinct chemicals that can clear away dead skin cells. For this article, we will list the main 3:

Hydroxy Acids (i.e. Lactic Acid, Salicylic Acid and Glycolic Acid) – There is research to suggest that these acids may replenish the supply of healthy skin cells and erode away the dead skin cells.

Retinol (Vitamin A) – Is a potent skin exfoliation and anti-aging agent that improves the visible signs of photoaging and normal chronological aging. Recommended for daily use.

Enzymes (Papain found in papayas or Bromelain found in pineapple extracts, both can also be found in the form of supplementary pills) – The digestion of these can break decompose proteins to soften the effects of the skin.
