Extra time off during the holidays was a great thing. It gave you the opportunity to catch up with family and friends, as well as get in all the extra tasks and activities that the season brought. It may have also meant more sleep. And if you’re like the average American, you may have needed it.

Sleep needs vary according to lifestyle and health. However, according to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), adults between the ages of 26-64 need between 7-9 hours of sleep a day. A 2013 NSF poll found that the average U.S. adult slept about 6 ½ hours on weekdays and slightly more than 7 hours on weekends.

If you’re not getting enough sleep, it can impact how you learn, focus, react and can interfere with every area of your life. So if you can squeeze in an extra hour of sleep, go for it. Even if it means just resting in bed and taking it easy.

The NSF also has the following tips for getting a good night’s sleep in general:

Make sure you’re getting sufficient sleep and rest every night.
